about us
(Reading in a Lord-of-the-rings-Shire tone helps go through this part that is not really about cheese…)
French-born Marie-Anne's family comes from great cheese-producing regions. (Well, maybe it is..)
When Marie-Anne first became vegan after a career as a veterinary surgeon and scientist, she soon realised none of the cheese options available suited her, and she turned to making her own cheese.
She began selling plant-based cheese from her street food stall on the Meadows in Edinburgh, the Beetroot Café police box, in December 2017.
Great feedback, a lot of work and plenty of courage made her open her own restaurant-café where she kept on producing cheese. She wrote a book, sold artisan cheese in shops and weekend markets and conquered the palate of all of us vegan folks.
After a long career as a cheese-maker and having established Earthy Vegan cheese as the successful Edinburgh-based brand it is today, Marie-Anne moved on to pastures new working for animal welfare and mixing her passions, knowledge and vision of a better, fairer and more compassionate world.
..but what happens to Earthy then? Well, here is where I come.
Spanish-born Mafalda, I was one of those customers buying cheese from the tiny police box at the meadows. (Thanks Marie-Anne). I’ve been vegan since 2008, vegan at heart for as long as I can remember. I shared, like most of you, the same feelings about vegan cheese and other vegan alternatives and although, taste wise, a lot has changed since back then, quality of ingredients remains an important part of my life.
I was already making my own cheese at home for me and my family and when I got the opportunity to take over Earthy Vegan Cheese (Thanks Ruben) I felt both the pressure and the need to carry on Marie-Anne’s beautiful legacy (she is still alive!)
I’m so glad and so looking forward to keep on learning and creating lovely tasting, clean and ethical cheese we are proud of so we can finally leave those play-dough cheese days behind.
Thank you all for your support, it would not be possible without you (my family is not that big!).
“Absolutely amazing homemade cheese. I will try to not eat it all in one sitting!”
